Memories with a beat

Digging into why songs matter...

I started this podcast mistakenly. I was in a course where I was supposed to start a podcast about being a podcast manager. But, oops, I started one about my passion, music! It is the best mistake I've made!

Through all the interviews I have gained such an appreciation for music, the creation process, and how music really affects people. My guests pick a song they have strong memories associated with. Now I remember what they shared when I hear the songs we discussed.

Ep. 26 S5 Piece of My Heart with Erica Saccoccio

When Erica Saccoccio hears Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” she doesn’t just think of music — she thinks of growing up wild, free, and fearless. Raised in Rhode Island by a fiercely independent, motorcycle-riding, leather-wearing single mom in the 1970s, Erica, who her mom lovingly called Little Indian, and her little sister Chris (affectionately known as Little Terror) grew up with a front-row seat to what bold womanhood looked like. Erica remembers singing Janis at full volume — barefoot, dancing in the living room, or belting it out with the windows down in her own convertible decades later.

It wasn’t a conventional upbringing, but it was rich in character, love, and strength — and Janis Joplin was the soundtrack to it all.

Janis Joplin wasn’t just a singer. She was a cultural force. Known for her raspy, soul-stretching vocals and uninhibited stage presence, Janis broke barriers for women in rock ‘n’ roll. “Piece of My Heart” was originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967, but when Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company released their version in 1968, it exploded. With her voice cracking and growling over distorted guitar riffs, Joplin redefined heartbreak. She didn’t just feel the pain — she owned it, wailed it, and made it defiant.

Erica recalls wearing jean vests and playing in biker bars where her mom’s friends would gather — a cast of colorful characters who made the world feel safe and chaotic all at once. They weren’t just rough-around-the-edges folks; they were family. Erica’s mom, a single parent before it was common or widely accepted, worked hard and loved harder. She embodied strength — the kind that comes from surviving, creating joy in the little things, and showing her girls how to walk through the world with grit and grace.

What makes a song stick? For Erica, it’s memory and meaning. “Piece of My Heart” became more than a favorite — it was a symbol. She and Chris didn’t just sing it — they embodied it. Even now, the lyrics hold space for them. It’s the kind of song that anchors you. Screaming “take another little piece of my heart now, baby!” was never about giving up — it was about reclaiming yourself, your voice, and your power.

Despite her short life, Janis Joplin left an indelible mark on music and culture. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and still influences artists across genres. “Piece of My Heart” continues to appear in movies, commercials, and playlists, proving that her voice — and what it stood for — still resonates.

For Erica, Janis remains a personal icon. She was more than a rock star; she was proof that being different, being loud, and being you is not only okay — it’s powerful.
