Digging into why songs matter...
I started this podcast mistakenly. I was in a course where I was supposed to start a podcast about being a podcast manager. But, oops, I started one about my passion, music! It is the best mistake I've made!
Through all the interviews I have gained such an appreciation for music, the creation process, and how music really affects people. My guests pick a song they have strong memories associated with. Now I remember what they shared when I hear the songs we discussed.

I first came across Stephen Quinn at Boot Scoot and Bourbon here in Jacksonville. His family invited me to watch the show with them, and I was immediately drawn to his voice and stage presence—even though he wasn’t performing Stand Up that night. That connection sparked my interest in his music and led to learning more about the story behind Stand Up. He shared that the song came to him shortly after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Influenced by patriotic artists like Toby Keith and Lee Greenwood, and with encouragement from his voice coach, he poured his heart into a song meant to call people back to kindness, courage, and unity.
Stand Up isn’t just another country anthem—it reflects Stephen’s values, his faith, and the way he views responsibility as an artist. It’s about showing up for the people around you, choosing grace, and staying rooted in what matters most. And while the lyrics speak to love for country, they also highlight something deeper: a desire for connection in times of uncertainty.
Stephen’s relationship with music started early. He grew up performing in church, where he learned not only how to sing, but how to communicate through song. It wasn’t about spotlight or applause—it was about meaning. That same intention still shows up in his work today, even as he’s taken his music to larger stages, including American Idol and the Little League World Series.
Stephen also shared how much his voice coach helped shape this track. It was more than just technical feedback. His coach challenged him to dig deeper emotionally, to make sure the message didn’t get lost in the melody. That encouragement pushed him to take the song from good to meaningful—and it shows.
He’s quick to say that this track isn’t about politics. It’s about people. It's about remembering we still have a say in the kind of world we create—every time we open our mouths, shake someone’s hand, or choose to listen instead of react. It’s a message that feels especially timely right now.
Talking with Stephen reminded me why I love this podcast. These conversations aren’t just about music—they’re about the moments that shape us. The way a song can rise out of the chaos, offer clarity, and stay with us long after the last note fades. Stand Up is one of those songs. It doesn’t scream for attention. It invites you in.
Stephen’s path isn’t about chasing fame—it’s about following purpose. And with Stand Up, he’s doing just that. Though he now lives in Nashville, Stephen regularly performs in the Jacksonville area. Follow him on social media to catch his next show—and keep an eye out for his upcoming release, Down Here.
